What I'm Reading

In addition to Sci-Fi Romance I also love mysteries. I am one of those annoying people who knows who dunnit before the big reveal. I just like the journey. I also watch all of those initial shows CSI, NCIS, SUV... Anywhooo...

Right now I just finished reading a book by Mary Higgins Clark called Daddy's Little Girl. I have read many of her books and this is a good one. It is about a woman whose sister was brutally murdered when she was a little girl.  Now 22 years later her sisters killer is being paroled and is trying to blame her sisters death on someone else. The main character Ellie is an investigative reporter so she uses her talents to try and prove his guilt beyond reason. I liked the story and the characters. The main character could be annoying in her doggedness for the truth, but you could understand why. I give it three stars. There are bad guys and car chases what more can you want?
Stay tuned because I am reading Saga the awesome space age comic by Brian K Vaughan and artist Fiona Staples

Is there one graphic novel you always walk by in the comic book store? You have heard all the reviews and everyone says it's something you need to read, but you aren't sold. Yes, the cover art is amazing, but you have bought a comic for cover art before and it sucked. So what makes this one any different? Well, this is how I felt about Saga so I walked by it again and again. Until one day my curiosity got the better of me and I picked it up. I read the first line and I was sold. This graphic novel is not for kids. There is sex, drugs, profanity, extreme violence, and a little human trafficking. This all comes from the mind of Brian K Vaughan (of Ex Machina). This story is well thought out and keeps you wanting more with every turn of the page. The characters are three-dimensional and all have specific motivations for what they do. The art by Fiona Staples pulls everything together in this beautiful mesh of Sci-Fi and Fantasy. The story begins simply enough a man (Marko) and a woman (Alana) are having a baby. It quickly becomes complicated when you realize that these people are soldiers on opposite sides of a war that spans the entire universe, and each side wants them dead. Now this family is on the run in a rocket that happens to be a tree with no controls and a mind of its own. To help on their journey, they find a ghost who becomes the babysitter, Marko's less than approving parents, and the author who's book influenced the two lovers. With an entire universe looking for them they find themselves in battle after battle, but Marko who was once a proficient soldier has given up violence. The cast of characters who are pursuing them includes a bounty hunter The Will whose companion is Lying cat,(yes he can tell if you're lying), Marko's crazy ex-girlfriend, and Prince Robot(who has a T.V. for a head). This is just a small fraction of the cast of alien races who are so artfully brought to life by Fiona Staples. So, if you want a story that keeps you wanting more even after the last page check out Saga Vol 1. I'm glad I did.
